Jim McElroy joined Think Dignity's board in April 2016.
Jim has been practicing law in San Diego County for over 30 years, specializing in civil litigation and civil rights.
Jim served on California’s Hate Crimes Commission and testified before legislative committees on hate crimes. He worked with the Southern Poverty Law Center and Morris Dees on trials that resulted in large civil verdicts against Tom Metzger and the White Aryan Resistance in Oregon, Aryan Nations in Idaho, and the Imperial Klans of America in Kentucky.
In San Diego, Jim has represented victims of hate crimes, doctors and patients at family planning clinics and one of the Plaintiffs in the Mt. Soledad Cross case, a First Amendment separation of church and state that has been litigated for over 20 years.
Jim is the past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Southern Poverty Law Center and currently serves on their board. He has served on the board of the ACLU of San Diego, the Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana and is on the advisory board of the Burrito Boys, (a group of teens that feed approximately 500 homeless persons every week) and is proud to have just recently joined the board of Think Dignity. He is a Master in the American Inns of Court and the past President of the San Diego Inn of Court.
Jim was awarded the American Association for Justice (formerly ATLA) Defense of Civil Liberties Award, ACLU of San Diego’s Helen Marston Award for his Civil Rights work, San Diego County Bar Association’s Service to the Legal Profession Award, the Outstanding Attorney of the Year Award, the National Civil Rights Award from the Anti-Defamation League, the Margaret Sanger Award for Distinguished Service in Protecting Women’s Rights and the Womancare Health Center Award for Protecting the Legal Rights of Women. He has received Certificates of Appreciation for his work from the Attorney General of the State of California, the State Bar of California, the San Diego County Bar Association and the San Diego Superior Court and has been previously listed as one of San Diego’s Super Lawyers.
